My name is Sue Dvorsky, and I’m honored to be running for Johnson County Supervisor for District 3. I'm excited to roll up my sleeves, get to work, and be a voice for all residents of Coralville, Tiffin, and Sharon Center.
Meet Sue
Sue Dvorsky is a Coralville resident and lifelong educator running for the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, District 3, which covers Coralville, Tiffin, and southwest Johnson County. She is a graduate of the University of Iowa, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in 1976 and a Master's in Special Education in 1992.
She spent more than three decades in the classroom, teaching special education in the Iowa City Community School District from 1979 until her retirement in 2010. Throughout her teaching career, she was deeply involved with the Iowa City Education Association, holding every office in the organization at various points.
Rooted in Service
Sue's roots in Iowa politics run deep. She has been active in local, state, and national political work for over 40 years, and was instrumental in Tom Vilsack's historic 1998 election as governor. In June 2010, just days after her final day of teaching, she stepped into the role of Chair of the Iowa Democratic Party, serving until February 2013 and steering the party through a challenging election cycle. During her tenure she put 55,000 miles on her car, traveling to counties across the state to rebuild grassroots organizing.
In 2016, she served as Director of Women's Engagement for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign in Iowa, working as a precinct captain and organizer in Coralville. More recently, she was appointed to Johnson County's temporary redistricting commission. Sue currently volunteers with the Coralville Community Food Pantry, and lives in Coralville with her husband, former Iowa State Senator Bob Dvorsky. Together, they have two adult daughters, Ann and Caroline.
MY KEY PRIORITIES
Citizen Engagement
We've had a vigorous primary, a Board-driven Strategic Planning Process, and lots of discussions surrounding the proposed Sheriff's Office and County Jail. I believe we need to be constantly revisiting and refining ways to listen to Johnson County residents, in settings that are convenient and comfortable for them. I commit to being available to my neighbors in and around Coralville, Tiffin, and Sharon Center. I'm anxious to learn, and carry their success stories, questions and concerns forward.
Fiscal Transparency
The process and products of government budgeting can be difficult for residents to decipher. I believe we can present information in ways that make it easier to understand where our funding is coming from, and where it is going. I commit to exploring ideas on new ways of doing business, with efficiency and transparency as the prime objectives.
Partnerships & Collaboration
The mission to grow and improve life for all Johnson County residents is too big for any one group to accomplish. Collaboration requires open minds, constant effort, and seeking new opportunities to learn. I believe that a business-as-usual approach is too often a barrier to exploring new ideas. I believe the time is right to look into different models of how we do our work, including the option of a county administrator. I commit to doing the hard work of participating in hard conversations.
